A British TV channel has been dramatically pulled off-air after the newsreader struggled to deliver the evening bulletin, in what viewers fear may have been a medical episode.
ITV presenter Rageh Omaar – a veteran in the news industry – was delivering the 10pm news when he began stumbling over his words while introducing a story about Britain’s declining night-life scene.
“For decades, Friday night has been party night. But when people start letting their hair down at the close of the morning week, the weekend, Britain’s towns and cities have traditionally been all about night life,” he said in a change to his usual clear speech.
“Pubs and clubs packed to the rafters with revellers but that seems to be changing along with people’s priorities as they choose to do things different at different times.”
The bulletin suddenly ended before a message was broadcast, stating “We’ll be back soon. We are temporarily unable to bring you our +1 service. We will resume shortly.”
Concerned viewers took to X – formerly known as Twitter – asking for an update on Mr Omaar’s health.
“Your Twitter feed is filling up with concerned viewers following the News at Ten. There is genuine concern for the health of Rageh Omaar who appeared very unwell,” one user wrote.
Another user said: “Is Rageh Omaar okay? He seemed quite unwell and suffering while reading the news. It was rather distressing to watch him struggling. Hope he gets some medical attention. His health is paramount.”
Other viewers slammed the channel for not taking him off-air sooner and feared he had suffered a stroke.
“He should have been given urgent medical attention,” one user said.
Another said: “It was quite clear he was unwell and should have been relieved of presenting duties. Very poor decision from management.”
Mr Omaar is the international affairs editor for ITV News and has worked as a presenter for 15 years. He was formerly a senior BBC foreign correspondent.
