Ghanshyam Das Birla, founder of the Birla Group, was not only a prominent industrialist of the independence era but also a close friend, advisor, and crucial ally of Mahatma Gandhi. Born into a Marwari family, GD Birla ventured into business to challenge the British. Initially, all banks refused to lend him money for the jute trade. Moreover, when Birla sought to purchase good land for his business, the British attempted to block his efforts. The British did not want any Indian to compete with them in the jute industry. Despite these obstacles, Birla’s determination and strategic acumen led him to overcome these challenges and make significant strides in the business world.
