LONDON — A former Cox Mill Charger has been named the Most Valuable Player in the league, according the British Basketball League.
Succeeding his teammate Sam Dekker, who secured MVP honours last season, Matt Morgan has been a walking bucket since the first time he graced a British Basketball League court back in September.
Standing out on a star-studded London Lions roster is no mean feat, but the North Carolina native has been recognized as the go-to guy for the defending Champions all season long and led the League in scoring for much of the campaign.
The dynamic guard’s rare combination of a rapid change of pace matched with elite scoring ability from every level make him a nightmare to guard and a constant headache for opposition coaches.
His selection for this award signifies the respect those in the League have for Morgan’s impact after the American came out on top following voting from the League’s Head Coaches, Captains and select members of the media.

The only unanimous selection for the All-League Team of the Year, Morgan now secures MVP honors as he heads into the season-ending Playoff Finals at The O2 on Sunday May 19, where the Lions stand one win away from ending an incredible season on a high.
Speaking following confirmation of his award, Morgan said:
“It is truly an honor to be receiving this award! To be named the MVP in such a talented league is an amazing accomplishment.
“I want to thank the British Basketball League first for this acknowledgment. I also want to thank my teammates, coaches, and staff from the London Lions! I can’t put into words how much all of you mean to me and can’t express how thankful I am for each and every one of you.
“To my Mom, Dad, Malcolm, Myles, Marcus, Marissa, and the rest of my family your support and love is what drives me every day. I love you all. This is an individual award, but it truly takes everyone in this organization and my life to make this possible. Thank you again – I am extremely blessed and humbled to be your 2023/24 MVP!”
Morgan’s Head Coach, Petar Bozic, added:
“Matt is an amazing young man. A hard worker, competitive and extremely talented, I’m so glad that I have had the chance to work with him this season and to witness just part of what he is capable of. His best basketball years are ahead of him, and I wish him perfect health so he can reach the maximum of his potential.”
London Lions General Manager Brett Burman commented:
“Matt is much more than a tremendous scorer, he is a fantastic culture piece that translates to winning. Stepping into an alpha role is never easy, yet Matt continues to make it look effortless.
“We are stoked for Matt, and honored to have witnessed his professionalism each and every day. The sky is the limit for this young man.”
Morgan averaged 19.2 points per game along with 3.3 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals for the London Lions.
