NewJeans’ Bubble Gum accused of plagiarism
Amid HYBE and ADOR‘s feud, NewJeans is facing plagiarism allegations! The ADOR girl group is being accused of copying jazz-funk band Shakatak for their song, Bubble Gum.
Following the release of Bubble Gum‘s music video on April 26, some netizens realised that the NewJeans track sounded similar to British jazz-funk band Shakatak’s 1980s song Easier Said Than Done. A clip of both the songs being played back to back has taken the internet by storm, with many stating that the two songs were indeed very similar.
While ADOR is yet to confirm whether Bubble Gum involves a licensed sample from Easier Said Than Done, Shakatak has reacted to the plagiarism claims. Responding to a netizen, who tweeted, “Hi SHAKATAK! I hope you got paid from ADOR for usage rights to your song Easier Said Than Done. Because it sounds exactly the same,” the band said, “Thanks we’ll look into this…it is v similar.” They further added, “Thank you all for your info and support on this It’s lovely to hear we still have great fans in S Korea.”
In case you missed out, HYBE and ADOR are in the midst of a massive feud. It all started on April 22, when HYBE initiated an audit against ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin. HYBE accused ADOR’s CEO and management of devising a plan to gain complete control of the sub-label, leaking sensitive information to external entities and attempts to tarnish the reputation of HYBE and its artists by manipulating public opinion negatively. Following that, ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin held a press conference to tell her side of the story on April 25.
