Cole Palmer was rewarded this week for his fine form at club level with a first senior call-up to the England national team.
The 21-year-old has scored four times in the Premier League for Chelsea this season, the most recent being his penalty to salvage a 4-4 draw against former club Manchester City on Sunday.
Having previously represented the Three Lions at every youth level up to the U21s, Palmer has been drafted into Gareth Southgate’s senior squad alongside Rico Lewis and Ezri Konsa, following the withdrawals of James Maddison, Lewis Dunk and Callum Wilson.
And on Tuesday, England released a clip of Palmer telling Chelsea team-mate Conor Gallagher that he thought someone was winding him up when he got the call-up.
It seems he got the call right after Sunday’s game, and it will be interesting to see if he gets a run out against Malta or North Macedonia, with England having already qualified for Euro 2024.
