More than a dozen people were arrested after B.C.’s gang enforcement unit busted down an illegal casino in Saanich.
Those who frequented the old Cook Street medical clinic, which Saanich Police described as an “illegal gaming house,” say investigators’ details have been blown out of proportion.
On Aug. 9, Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit BC (CFSEU-BC) told CHEK News the residence was essentially turned into an underground casino.
“The house is essentially gutted, it’s opened up, and when you walk into a casino in Las Vegas or River Rock or wherever it is, a mini version of that is inside these homes complete with tables and dealers and cards and dice games,” said Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton, spokesperson for the CFSEU-BC.
“Anything you can think of, so that’s what we found.”

Since CHEK News aired this story earlier this month, several patrons who visited the facility say these claims are false.
One frequent poker player, who wishes to remain anonymous under the alias ‘Jake,’ tells CHEK News this was simply a group of friends getting together and playing cards but with money.

“There is no baccarat table, which was described in some of the articles … and there are definitely no electronic gaming. It’s just regular people who want to play poker,” said Jake.
Jake is not alone. Another source CHEK News spoke with over the phone, who also is not sharing his identity, says the description from police does not match what he experienced.
He says it was a quiet place to play poker, avoiding the usual crowds of a local casino. Both Jake and this player admit they knew their actions were illegal.
All 14 people arrested have been released and are pending charges. Saanich Police and the CFSEU-BC were not available for comment Sunday.
